Appendix 3 Battle Sites Grouped and Keyed to Major Cities/Locations

This appendix is intended as an aid for planning visits to sites in or near one city or in a geographical area, or side trips centered on a major city. It may be helpful for visitors and tourists unfamiliar with an area, who may have the names of larger cities in mind but are not familiar with smaller cities or battle sites. Consult the maps and the text given in each town/battle site for more information and directions. The list below follows the general schema of north to south, east to west. States are listed in the geographical order found elsewhere in this book.

How much the visitor can see depends on time and driving constraints. Some states, like Rhode Island, are small; other states are larger, with distances of 50 or more miles between sites. Generally the sites within a geographical area would be day or weekend trips, depending on how much one wants to cover.

Sites indicated with boldface type indicate the tourist may want to allow extra time, as these sites have been developed with exhibits, musea, monuments, etc. and/or are in historically significant cities. Keep in mind that many sites feature special seasonal or commemorative events such as re-enactments or thematic ranger presentations. The visitor may want to check in advance for these and plan accordingly.
