Ann Drake has given us one of the most detailed descriptions of shamanic healing in the literature. The text begins with her shamanic initiations in the jungles of Borneo and takes us through her journey as a clinical psychologist dedicated to the healing of her clients. In so doing, she extends the territory of shamanism into clinical psychology by demonstrating, through clinical case histories, how shamanic techniques such as "soul retrieval" and "extraction" enhances the healing of numerous types of tramatuc and dissociative disorders. [Healing of the Soul] is a must-read for all mental health professionals wanting to integrate shamanism into psychotherapeutic practice.
Healing of the Soul is an extraordinary, compassionate, and enlightened account of the parallels and differences between ancient shamanic and current psychological approaches to suffering and healing. It is also an authentic and inspiring adventure story that will open your eyes, mind, heart, and spirit.
This is an unusual trailblazer, full of wonder and maturity, filled to the brim with insights, courageously wrested from the depths.
About the author:Ann Drake has been a psychotherapist since 1972 and a shamanic practitioner since 1992. In the seventies and early eighties she worked in a feminist therapy collective with women who had experienced physical, sexual and emotional trauma. During this period she worked to define new models of treatment that went beyond the overmedication and long hospitalizations that were common at that time. In 1984 Ann entered a doctoral program in clinical psychology at the Antioch/New England School of Professional Psychology. Upon graduation, Ann joined the faculty in the doctoral program at Antioch. In addition to teaching, she maintained a private practice, wrote articles, and gave talks and workshops. Ann had begun a book on the role of cultural violence on emotional and psychological functioning when she went to Borneo in 1992 and met a shamanic healer who transformed her life. Ann was initiated into the Unani tradition of shamanic healing by the Bomoh, a wise and gifted healer. Upon her return, she devoted herself to the study and practice of shamanism and worked toward a clinical and theoretical synthesis of psychology and shamanism. The results of her healing work have been so powerful and dramatic that she has written a book and offers workshops and training for those who wish to seek an integration of shamanic and Western psychological thought. |
